Spring is FINALLY in the air around here! I didn’t think we would ever see the end of all of that snow. For me, Springtime is the perfect opportunity to make steps to feel renewed and more alive after a dreary winter indoors. Renewal is not a simple as it sounds though; it takes work in not just one, but several areas of life. My experience with springing towards renewal includes a conscious effort to improve several areas of my life. I’d like to take some time today to share with you how I plan to RENEW my mind, body and soul as we enter this season of flowers, birds, and picnics.
Reading His Word is the most important and effective step you can take. I find that often when I am feeling down it is due mostly to not getting into my Bible. My Bible is my road map for life and when I lose track of that map, i tend to lose focus of what is important in life. When feeling the winter blues or just feeling down, the best place to find words to renew the soul is in the words of our Creator Himself. Start in the Psalms and you’ll be amazed how quickly you start to feel like a new person.
Eating Healthier also helps to renew us. Our bodies cooperate with us better when we eat the healthy food they were made to consume. Searching Pinterest for new healthy recipes can be very enlightening. You’ll be amazed how many of your everyday recipes you can find a healthy spin on. Healthy eating isn’t limited to just fruits and vegetables either, even baked goods can be made healthier if you take the time to bake from scratch instead of buying a box mix at Walmart. Start with finding healthier versions of foods you already love and then venture into the wealth of new healthy recipes Pinterest has to offer, your body will love you for it and you’ll be amazed how many healthy foods are also delicious.
New Schedules can also bring about a feeling of newness. During winter we spend most of our time inside and, well, you can only clean your house top to bottom so many times a week. We fall so deeply into our routines that it can be quite difficult to get out of them, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t. Developing a new routine, especially one that involves plenty of time outside helps our mind, body and soul. So start something new, try getting into your Bible, exercising at a different time and/or spending more time outside. Whatever you do, make sure it leaves you feeling renewed and not rundown.
Enjoy Special Moments with Special People. Often we get so caught up with our careers, housework, and other daily routines that we let the special moments slip by without notice. Unfortunately none of us stop aging, we all keep getting older and the opportunities to enjoy special moments will keep passing by us if we don’t stop for them. God gives us the people in our lives for us to love and spend time with throughout the year not for us to simply see once a year at Christmas. So take time to say hello or make a phone call to someone you haven’t spoken with in awhile, make time for picnics and other family get togethers, and take time to enjoy the world through the eyes of a child.
Work in a Work Out several times a week. God created our bodies to be active; when we are not active, we are often not as happy either. I will be the first to admit that I struggle in this area. Anyone else struggle in this area too? Somehow it seems way too easy to find other “more important” things to do than work out. Finding a type of exercise you enjoy will help with this. A year ago I found Pilates, and while I still find myself making up excuses, I exercise more often because I enjoy Pilates. You’ll find that as you exercise more, you’ll be happier, both with your body and in your mood. With the weather getting warmer outside, I encourage you to get active. Find a type of exercise that you enjoy and stick with it!
Will you join me in RENEWing our lives this year? I’d love to hear from you, how do you go about feeling renewed when you are feeling down and struggling with the post-winter blues?
